Greece Getting Caught in the Grips of HIV

HIVGreece is going through the most turbulent period of its life time. When it was hit by debt crisis, the world remained positive about it and efforts were made by whole world to help Greece in overcoming the crisis. But gradually the crisis turned worse as it started to impact the whole world economy.

From time to time, the Greek Government has introduced various cuts in its budget which has begun its adverse impact over the governance of the country. It has been reported in 2010, the spending of the government over health care was reduced by 36%. The reduction in the spending over health care has led to reduced capacity of the health authorities to detect and treat diseases like HIV.

Greece previously had been doing astonishingly well in protecting new born babies from contacting HIV from their mums. However, recently, a social worker brought in the attention of the government that a woman has transmitted HIV to her baby, due to government’s failure of detecting HIV in her timely.

It has further come to light that the usages of drugs like heroine have manifold among the people. It seems like people are trying to calm down themselves from the stress of debt crisis by taking the help of drugs.

Moreover, prostitutes have also gained advantage in the debt ridden country as they are in great demand. Looking at the worsening scenario of the country it is hard to say as to where the country is headed towards and what will be its future.

Since 2010, the HIV cases in the country have almost doubled. Commenting over the increased HIV cases in the country, Dedes from Positive Voice (NGO) noted, "The HIV situation in Greece is like a dry forest in summer which has just been hit with a gust of wind… It could go up in flames any minute”.
