Radiotherapy Combined with Hormone Treatment Can Prevent Prostate Cancer

Radiotherapy Combined with Hormone Treatment Can Prevent Prostate CancerTill now, we knew that hormone therapy treatment is the only most viable treatment to cure prostate cancer in patients but with increasing number of inventions in medical science, some researchers had recently claimed that the combination of radiotherapy with hormone therapy can give better results in treating the illness.

The Medical Research Council (MRC) ran a large study in collaboration with the NCIC Clinical Trials Group located at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada to get some newest treatments to cure prostate cancer in patients.

The study was run from 1995 to 2005. In the study, researchers randomly involved 1,205 men suffering from prostate cancer from around UK and Canada. The study had been named as PR07. About 50% men from the group were given hormone therapy, which is a standard drug treatment that is usually given to patients affected from prostate cancer whereas the other 50 percent were introduced a combination of hormone therapy and radiotherapy.

The results of the study clearly showed that 74 percent men in the latter group showed improvement in health and were still alive at the seven-year point as compared to the 66% of the former group. Moreover, the combined medication group also showed 50% lesser risks of specifically dying from their prostate cancer.

After learning the above results, the researchers involved in the study have clearly highlighted in their statements that combining radiotherapy with hormone therapy in patients suffering from prostate cancer, has significantly improved chances of men's survival than was done by the hormone therapy treatment alone.

Regarding the situation and the new findings, Senior Scientist at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit, Mr. Matthew Sydes, comments as follows: "The additional side effects of radiotherapy are minimal and we are delighted that, through the combined efforts of patients, clinicians and researchers across the world, we can be confident when doctors recommend radiotherapy for their patients”.
