UCLA Finds Fish Oil and Low Calorie Diet Beneficial for Men

UCLA Finds Fish Oil and Low Calorie Diet Beneficial for MenThe University of California (UCLA) has revealed that those men who would take low fat diet with fish oil for four to six weeks before getting their prostate removed would have fewer chances to develop prostate cancer cells than those who take calorie rich diet.

Researchers found that those men who take fish oil enriched diet, which is low in calorie, have increased omega-3 fatty acids in the inner membrane of their prostate. These fatty acids act as shield against prostate cancer but such kind of activity was not found in those men, who take traditional fat western diet.

Blood test reports have also proved the same that those who take low calorie diet in combination with fish oil does not get afflicted with cancer early but such advantage was not found in those who take calorie rich diet.

Dr. William Aronson, who is the author of the study, was of the view that it is very important to control the expansion of prostate cancer cells as once they get out of control, it is very difficult to treat them. He further affirmed, “The finding that the low-fat, fish oil diet reduced the number of rapidly dividing cells in the prostate cancer tissue is important because the rate at which the cells are dividing can be predictive of future cancer progression”.

To control the cancer, it is very important that proliferation should occur at low level; the lower it would be less would be the chances for its spread, said William. To reach up to this conclusion, Williams took radical prostatectomy samples and from it, he took out the stained samples and then counted the proliferation level.

In the study, 48 men took part and they were given the fish oil less calories diet, and it was found that their Ki-67 level was declining. Increased Ki-67 in men is said to be the reason for the growth of prostate cancer cells.
