Migraines can be avoided by exercise

Zynga Announces Opportunities for Engineers, Game DevelopersMigraines can be prevented by regular workouts, according to scientists just the way common prescription drug and relaxation therapy treats migraine.

A reduction seen in women with all the three treatment options and it was as much as three quarters but when it came to average reduction, it was modest.

It was concluded by scientists from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden that the above effect could be achieved by getting on an exercise bike about three times a week.

About 91 women were taken in for a study by a team led by Dr Emma Varkey, all these women were from 18 to 65 years of age and they all were from a single headache clinic in Sweden.

All these women had about two to eight headaches every month, all experienced neurologist-diagnosed migraine that was without aura in some cases and otherwise.

Earlier studies have shown that migraines can be avoided by prescription drug topiramate and relaxation therapy. But it has been now concluded that exercise is as effective as medicine in avoiding migraines.

Dr Varkey said, “It was a bit surprising and very interesting that the change in number of migraine attacks was almost similar in all three groups.”
