Better toddler talk related to folic acid in pregnancy

Better toddler talk related to folic acid in pregnancyA new study from Norway states that there was a decline in kids who had severe language delays among women who took folic acid supplements in the first two months of pregnancy.

Several birth defects are reduced if folic acid is taken on time. In US and Canada, attempts to give folic acid to women are on but not all countries follow this. Doctors worry about the vitamin B content being given to women.

Dr. Ezra Susser from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in New York, said, "We don't think people should change their behavior based on these findings. But it does add weight to the public health recommendation to take folic acid early in pregnancy."

He stated that subsequent development after birth is also due to what one does during pregnancy.

About 40,000 Norwegian women were given a survey a few months into their pregnancies.

Same women were contacted when their kids grew up and they were asked about their kids' language skills.

Severe language delays are seen among four out of 1,000 kids born to women who took folic acid alone or combined with other vitamins.
