Four years ago, Master Ryan Saunders, a central Queensland toddler died a harrowing death in Rockhampton Hospital on September 26, 2011 after receiving medical treatment. In context to same, a State Coroner Mr. Michael Barnes has recently delivered a highly critical report.
Though in his report, the coroner has delivered some crucial points upon Ryan’s treatment and his death after death, he has not recommended any disciplinary action against the doctor who oversaw Ryan's treatment, reason being his previous clear off by the Medical Board of Queensland for not performing any unsatisfactory professional conduct.
The Courier-Mail in November 2007 revealed about the case and circumstances of the two-year-olds death severely shocked the entire state.
Ryan’s devastated parents Terry and Donna initially admitted Ryan to Emerald Hospital for the treatment but soon, he was shifted to Rockhampton for an ultrasound. Despite running tests, his serious bacterial infection was not discovered for 24 hours. Meanwhile, Ryan was given Panadol to get some relief from his pain.
In his coronial inquest findings delivered today, Mr. Barnes said that the Director of Pediatrics at Rockhampton Base Hospital, Dr. Peter Roper “repeatedly made a serious error of judgment” as he declined to run any blood tests of the toddler though he was urged to perform the action by a number of his junior doctors.
