Men develop type 2 diabetes more than women

Scottish scientists have conducted a research and it has been found that as compared to women, men are more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

In Scotland alone, about 200,000 people get affected with obesity and as compared to women, men gain less weight, according to academics at Glasgow University.

Scientists from the Scottish Diabetes Research Network conducted the research and the reason of men having diabetes more than women can be figured out through this research.

New research shows that for developing type 2 diabetes, men need to gain lesser weight.

The Body Mass Index of men was lesser than women among those who developed the disease, according to a study carried out by clinical academics at Glasgow University.

This research can throw light on the reason of why men have higher rates of diabetes in many parts of the world.

Lead researcher Professor Naveed Sattar, of the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences, said that for developing type 2 diabetes, being overweight was a major risk factor apart from genetics, age and ethnicity.

He said, “Previous research has indicated that middle-aged men are at a higher risk of developing diabetes than women and one possible explanation is that men have to gain less weight than women to develop the condition.”
