A United Nations meeting was held in the region to discuss on disease management during which, Federal Health Minister Ms. Nicola Roxon said that the time today urges that all the governments worldwide unite and lead their fight against big tobacco firms.
Ms. Roxon also said in her statement that the governments have good powers to stop or reduce the multinational cigarette manufacturer's work across borders, enabling them lessen the harm being caused today to nations from smoking.
Moreover, there are also news that a UN general assembly high-level meeting in New York along with smoking is also focusing upon all the preventive measures that can lessen the risks of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes in the region.
Ms. Roxon added in her statement while urging UN to step ahead in fight against diseases that Australia has already taken up the World Health Organization's challenge to introduce plain packaging for all cigarettes to reduce the sales of cigarette in the region.
"They are fighting vigorously because they know plain packaging will hurt them by reducing sales, and they know if Australia succeeds in being the first country to implement these laws we won't be the last", said Ms. Nicola
