Cardiff Devils Researcher Located Weak Point of Breast Cancer Stem Cells

Breast-CanceA researcher from Cardiff Devils has located a treatment that could help avoid the spread of breast cancer.

Cardiff PhD student Luke Piggott has found out a weak point of breast cancer stem cells that would help in reducing the mortality rate of the breast cancer patients.

Mr. Piggott’s associate Dr. Richard Clarkson stated that cancer stem cells have been responsible in developing 1% of the tumor, and later, they are responsible for the spread in the other parts. He said that to cut the risk of spread that 1% of the portion has to be attacked.

Dr. Clarkson added, “We’ve identified the Achilles’ heel of cancer stem cells with this combination of suppressing the activity of c-FLIP and using this established drug to completely eliminate the stem cells”.

He said that as these stem cells instigate the spread of cancer in the other parts, it becomes dangerous as tumor in the breast won’t harm as much as in the other parts of the body, which leads to grave condition of the patient.

Mr. Piggott has tried to make breast cancer stem cells responsive to the anti-cancer agent named TRAIL. By this technique, nearly 98% of the tumors can be reduced and will be effective in case the tumor comes back.
