In spite of various awareness events, and dental and oral health seminars outlined to encourage people for frequent oral heath checkups, the problem is likely to affect people all over the world, regardless of age.
Consequently, Monday witnessed the observance of World Oral Health Day and a number of awareness campaigns. The Dean of Faculty TP Chaturvedi, at Banaras Hindu University, has expressed disappointment that a majority of people are ignorant to care an important body part.
He said: "It would not be an exaggeration to say that oral health remains the most neglected in the region, mainly due to lack of awareness".
In addition, the expert has also advised people to brush their teeth two times a day as well as avoid using cheap powders or ashes, which is a usual practice in rural areas.
Besides awareness campaigns, the university faculty has expressed enthusiasm to carry out similar events in remote rural areas. A team, including dental experts, has organized a trip to rural areas and offered treatments and check-ups through mobile dental van.
According to a recent Oral Health Survey, around 55% adults confessed very less dental appointments.
