USA is on its way to becoming a nation of the obese and the super-sized nation.
Over a third of the people in USA have been found to be obese i.e. they are 30-lbs over what is considered a healthy weight.
According to a new study, if the trend of increasing weight gain of the past decades continues, there will be a dramatic increase in the number of people who are obese.
According to an analysis in The Lancet, from 32% in 2008, the percentage of men who are obese could rise to 50% in 2030, while from 35% in 2008, there could be a 45% to 52% increase in women who are over-weight or obese.
The study says, in that eventuality, the number of obese people would increase from 99 million 2008 to 164 million by 2030 in the USA, resulting in soaring health-care costs, as people develop more weight-related diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Study lead Claire Wang, an Assistant Professor of Health Policy at Columbia University said, the trend has to be reversed, which is not easy considering we are surrounded by cheap junk food, on top of living in an environment that promotes a sedentary lifestyle.
