Del Monte Takes on FDA over Wrongly Blaming Cantaloupe for Salmonella PoisoningFew days back, cantaloupes were banned by the FDA claiming the product as poisonous. During their investigation, they found that 12 cases have been reported of salmonella poisoning and linked all of them with Florida Company’s imported cantaloupes. They therefore even announced an outbreak of salmonella in the region and told the company to set out a recall of its product.

On March 22, Del Monte issued a deliberate recall of around 5,000 cartons of whole cantaloupes. Following this, on July 15, the FDA put a banned on the product’s import facilities.

But now, it has come into notice that Del Monte Fresh Produce has filed a charge in opposition to the Food and Drug Administration, as neither the company nor the public health officials were perfect in carrying out their investigations over salmonella outbreak. They mistakenly blamed the imported cantaloupes.

Besides FDA, the company has also threatened to file a suit against the Oregon Public Health Division and William Keene, the senior epidemiologist of the state agency as both of these also played vital roles in gathering information and then further analyzing the reports for acknowledging the cause of this outbreak.
