Increase in US stroke rates in youngsters

strokeScientists have stated that due to unhealthy lifestyles, in the US strokes are being experienced by more children and young adults.

Between 1995 and 2008, on about eight million patients a year, hospital data was analyzed by researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In under a decade, there was a rise seen in the stroke rates in five to 44-year-olds, scientists stated.

People who suffered from strokes had diseases like obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes and these were common in them.

Due to bleeding on the brain, haemorrhagic stroke happens and scientists looked at this along with ischemic stroke due to blood clots.

The rate of ischemic stroke was 3.2 strokes per 10,000 hospital cases and with an increase of 31 per cent in five to 14-year-olds the rate went to 4.2 per 10,000 cases.

Between the ages of 15 to 34 years, there was a 30 per cent rise and a 37 per cent rise was seen in people aged 35 and 44.

It was noted that in men the increase was more compared to women in all age groups.

In the age group of five to 14 years, there was no decrease in figures for haemorrhagic stroke and all other age groups showed a decline.

Researchers said, “The increase in ischemic stroke far outweighs the decreases.”

People who suffered from strokes also saw a prevalence of hypertension, obesity and tobacco use.
