Health minister Nicola Roxon has stated that OZ is all set to make a courageous move when it comes to making cigarette packaging as the nation plans to introduce plain cigarette packaging soon.
The lower house has passed the bill that will ban tobacco company product branding and it is now being expected that the upper house will also pass the bill without any problem.
Cigarette packets will not have any logos from the next year and in a uniform font the company brand names will appear on the packs. The move is expected to bring down smoking rates.
Olive green will be the colour of the packs and there will be graphic warnings like kids in hospitals, diseased gums etc.
Roxon said, “This is the first very courageous step that our parliament has taken to introduce plain packaging. We're going to be the first country around the world to introduce it and January 1 is the start date and it looks like the legislation will be well and truly passed by then.”
Tobacco giants have been enraged by the move and they state that this move will not bring down the smoking rates at all.
