A study published in the journal Brain has claimed of finding location in brain where melodies and tunes are stored. The findings are a part of a study on memory loss in dementia patients. The findings are actually helpful in determining the areas of our brain which are critical for storing knowledge and memories.
For the study, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was conducted which showed location of music memories in the brain. Moreover, it also showed area which helps one in recognizing famous tune, face, day to day sound and naming objects.
During the study, it was found that the brain area for music storage tend to shrink in dementia patients. Through the study, results could be drawn as to what happens when these areas degenerates in people with disease like dementia.
It has come to light that participants of the study were asked to distinguish between well-known tunes and made-up tunes that had the same key and tempo but a different combination of notes. The researchers found that participants with semantic dementia were unable to recognize the famous melodies.
Through the study, it has come to light that About 27 participants with dementia losses their understanding of words, objects and concepts. However, Alzheimer’s patients didn’t show significant damage to brain, during the study.
