Technology Sector, Company News

Du posted impressive growth figure during the second quarter. The net profit rose 51 per cent for Q2 while its second quarter revenue rose 32 per cent to AED 1.66 billion due to increased usage by the operators. The Dubai-based carrier now claims 44 per cent of the UAE's mobile subscriptions reporting 32 per cent increase in mobile revenue during the second quarter.

Osman Sultan, the firm’s CEO hailed the performance and added that it indicated investor’s confidence in the telecom firm. He hoped further rise in average revenue per user. Du gained market share from former monopoly Etisalat leading to rise in contract mobile users.

Martin Mabbutt, Nomura telecoms analyst added, "These look like a good set of results -- revenues, EBIDTA, customer share and free cash flow continue along a good trajectory. Du is addressing a market that is not very competitive - Etisalat has traditionally earned a very high return, with margins of more than 60 percent, so it's quite an easy target."

Meanwhile, Etisalat's second-quarter profit fell 14.9 percent for the second quarter in a row. Mobile ARPU was reported at 118 dirhams in the second-quarter, up from 111 dirhams a year earlier.
