Prostate Cancer has developed much hype in the recent past and there has been number of efforts made by campaigners to tell men that they need to get regular screenings as well as checkups. GP’s, on the other hand, are of the view that they are not going to recommend these screenings to men as early as 40 years of age, as this could rather have a counter effect and could cause more harm than any good to them.
It is the urologists as well as the pathologists that believe otherwise. They feel there is a need for screening at an early age to find out if a man is at a risk of developing the disease.
"The problem is you end up treating lots of people who don't need to be treated”, RACGP Spokesman Prof Del Mar said. He further added that "we are not going to liberalize it”.
He was also of the view that there is still not enough evidence to prove that this test is an absolute essential and one needs to stay away from the tests until they are sure it might not further harm them, rather than benefitting them in any way.
