Combo of Zyvox and Antidepressants can be Fatal: FDA

Combo of Zyvox and Antidepressants can be Fatal: FDAIn a bid to alert patients under medication of antidepressant, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has come out to warn about the potential consequences of having Pfizer's Zyvox antibiotic along with many psychiatric drugs.

Among the lined out 29 prohibited psychiatric drugs are Pfizer's Zoloft and Pristiq, Eli Lilly's Cymbalta and GlaxoSmithKline's Paxil and Wellbutrin. It’s being claimed that Zyvox reacts with these antidepressants to trigger a poisonous reaction in the name of serotonin syndrome, which further instills chemical enlargement in the brain.

The consequences extend from confusion, memory issues, hyperactivity, excessive sweating and muscle twitching. If reports are to be believed, $1.18 billion in revenue was reported in Pfizer due to Zyvox last year.

However, Kristen Neese, a Pfizer Spokeswoman, said: “The current US package insert for Zyvox "already includes prominent information regarding the potential for serotonergic interactions, the risk of serotonin syndrome and the need for careful observation of patients prescribed Zyvox who are on such agents”.

Nevertheless, the maker of the drug has assured that all the mandatory safety checks to reinforce health and safety to patients, would be done. Moreover, the FDA has recommended patients to consult their doctors on the priority basis before taking any further step.
