In a study, it was revealed that the broken sleep could affect the ability of building memories. The study was performed on mice. This study was conducted by the researchers and experts at the Stanford University. They revealed that the brain uses deep sleep for evaluating the day's events and it decides what to keep as the memories of the person.
The technique, which was used in the study, is known as Optogenetics. In Optogenetics, some specific cells are engineered so that they could be controlled by light.
The researchers and experts transmit light pulses into the brain of the mice when they are sleeping. These light pulses targets the main brain cell, which plays an important role in switching between the states of sleeping and being awake.
This research was led by Dr Luis de Lecea with some other experts and researchers. : "Sleep continuity is one of the main factors affected in various pathological conditions that impact memory, including Alzheimer's and other age-related cognitive deficits”, says Dr. Lecea.
Researchers added that the people who are addicted to drugs and alcohols are also affected by broken sleep. Even the apnea patients are affected by this sleep disorder. Apnea is asleep disorder in which the throat repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep restricting oxygen and causing the patient to wake up from deep sleep.
