Renowned food chain McDonald's have announced to serve a fruit or vegetable with each Happy Meal, across the United States and revealed that it will make the addition to its children’s meal and swap the French fries with a serving of fruit or vegetable.

The food chain has faced strong embarrassment for nutritional quality of its food and its marketing to children where critics have questioned its practice of selling kids meals along with a toy to encourage children for junk food and contributing enough to increase obesity cases. Consequently, during the past year, authorities in San Francisco have banned toys from fast-food meals that do not meet certain nutritional criteria.

While commenting on the forecasted move, a family physician at NorthShore University Health System, Geeta Maker-Clark, observed it as a good step to limit the continuously increasing obesity cases.

"I applaud any move toward including more whole food into a heavily processed meal”, added Geeta Maker-Clark."Bringing a whole food into it shifts the pendulum toward something healthier, and I applaud the decreased portion sizes”.

Besides alteration in Happy Meal the company has also outlined some measures to reduce the amount of sodium in its food and assured that it will work towards more reduction in sugar, saturated fat along with calories.
