An Australian neuroscientist from University of Oxford, Stephen Hicks presented his invention- world’s first pair of bionic glasses at the Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition in London last week.
This pair of bionic glasses would help blind people to lead their lives without any apprehension and without a feeling of dependence over others. In first of its kind, this exceptional pair of glasses consists of minute cameras and has software technology taken from video games.
During the launch, he told that these glasses had an upper hand over the bionic eye or retinal implant as glasses were pocket friendly, non invasive. Hicks said, “Basically they are just an iPhone and a pair of glasses”.
The glasses would be of great help for elderly people with muscular degeneration, who find difficulty in their vision. Video camera attached to the rim would arrest information and dimensions about the objects and also the distance at which they were kept. Then, the received information would be sent through a wire to a computer processor in the wearer's pocket which would read the object in a pattern of dots. And, small LEDs built into the lens would light up in the shape of the object. The brighter the light would be, the closer the object is.
Hicks told that they would adopt plenty of software which could do the job of face recognition and of tracking.
