Socio-Economic Conditions Influence Health: Study

Socio-Economic Conditions Influence Health: StudyAs per a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, a Sweden-based research claimed that with the increase in the socio-economic condition, the risk of high blood pressure is reduced.

The researchers from the Karolinska Institute examined the data of Swedish Twin Registry of 12,000 twins belonging to the same sex and born between1926 and 1958, so as to find the adult and parental socio-economic status .The researchers found that the children who were born in poor economic condition and their social status improved with time were believed to be at a lower risk of high blood pressure, says the researcher.

Another survey was made from 1998 to 2002 by screening across the Lifespan Study (SALT), on the health and standard of living carried out by people in 1973. The survey comprised of questions about blood pressure and its treatments, occupations of the parents.

The people who had a lower standard of living and moved upward were at 12.5% risk of high blood pressure, which was less than the 15.4% who did not see any improvement in their socio-economic standards at all. As per Cathy Ross, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foundation, "Low socioeconomic status can increase the risk of poor health and in particular risk factors associated with heart disease such as high blood pressure”.
