Relaxed Abortion Norms Decline Termination Rate

abortionsThe relaxed norms for abortion introduced in Spain had surprisingly lowered the number of abortions. The new law pertaining abortions was introduced in Spain along with other European countries, last July.

Earlier, the abortions were rarely carried out in public hospitals and were only allowed under restricted circumstances. The abortions were only permitted up to 12th week in case of rape and up to 24th week if the pregnancy posed a risk to mother’s physiological health. The new norm introduced relaxed the restrictions with setting limit for termination from 14 to 22 weeks of pregnancy if there is any malformation or high risk to health of the mother.

The implemented law arose to a lot of demonstrations from Catholic Church supporters, Human rights, Humanitarians and Popular Party (PP) who believed that with introduction of this law, the number of abortions will increase. PP filed an appeal against it on the ground of “Right of life”.

But the latest news from Association of abortion clinics surprised all. The termination has declined by 2 to 10 percent pertaining to different regions. In Andalusia, abortion rate fell by 5 percent. Spain’s health ministry confirmed a declined pattern in the abortions and is yet to release the official figures.
