Parents are being encouraged to start talking to the children as young as two-years old about sex education. The Australian Research Center in Sex, Health and Society says a child can never be too young or too old to talk about sex.
Talk soon, talk often, is the mindset the health department is trying to encourage parents to have. Many parents think that talking about sex will make their child want to go out and “do it”. Jenny Walk, of La Trobe University states that talking actually has the opposite effect on young people.
Of course many parents are nervous to talk about sexuality with their little kids. Children are uncomfortable talking about sexual feelings, bodies and love with their parents, but it is important to create a health relationship which allows young children to openly discuss sex.
FPV Deputy CEO, Elsie L’Huillier states: “There should be a whole process where the issue of sexuality comes up as natural conversation. It’s not a highly stressful ‘Let’s sit down and talk’”, as many parents make it out to be.
At lease girls are given information about periods and babies from the mothers, sons often miss out on certain opportunities for their parents can talk to them about sex and relationships.
