Professor Roy Taylor of Newcastle University claimed that a change in the regular dietary habits could reduce the type 2 diabetes level among patients. As per Professor Taylor, a daily restrictive diet of 600 calories decreased the fat level in the pancreas resulting in normal functioning of the body.
The methodology implied by type 2 diabetic patients could result in curing the disease. Professor Taylor made a study on 11 patients with type 2 diabetes. They were asked to follow the strict diet which consisted of drinks and excluded starchy food for 8 weeks.
The changes started taking place just after a week with decline in the blood sugar levels, thereby regaining the normal level and resulting in appropriate functioning of the pancreas. The fat accumulated in the pancreas led to difficulty for the proper working of the pancreas thereby obstructing secretion of insulin from the cells which controlled the blood sugar level.
The idea of crash diet was influenced from the observations of gastric bypass patients, who did not contract type 2 diabetes. Earlier, it was assumed that the effect was due to surgery, which led to proper functioning of pancreas. The special MRI scans conducted by Professor Taylor resulted in decrease in the fats by 6% within 8 weeks of strict diet.
