Westfield shopping centre will be introducing paid parking in October. The parking plans will be introduced keeping in mind the parking space used by the non-shoppers. The parking fees will be asked if the customers exceed the three-hour limit of the parking.
Westfield Regional General Manager, Talbot Sanderson stated that the organization is quite contented with the approval of the paid parking. This plan was suggested due to the congestion problem at the parking area. Moreover, the people who actually come for shopping face the parking problem the most. According to him, 93% of the customers whose cars are parked do not visit the places for shopping purpose.
Sanderson said, ‘‘I think you’ll find that once it’s introduced those shoppers will be delighted that they can get a park easily and conveniently”.
A pamphlet was introduced by the Westfield which stated that about 25% space in the parking lot is occupied by the non-shoppers. It stated that with the introduction of parking fee, most of the customers will not be at disadvantage, because usually people do not stay for more than three hours.
However, many residents are not happy by the idea. Lord Mayor Cr Graham Quirk also called it a "slap in the face" for the local residents.
