A recent research conducted by the Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) has revealed that a number of high-profile food brands add large quantities of salt in their food stuffs. Health experts said that excess of salt intake is associated with the development of a number of health complications, such as vomiting, high blood pressure and heart attacks.
Cash carried out a survey on 300 types of sausage brands to analyze their salt content. The result of the survey revealed that one out of three sausages contains higher quantity of salt than recommended by the government.
Cash has also revealed that most popular brands like Iceland, Sainsbury's and Richmond sausages were found to have the highest salt levels. Richmond's skinless sausages were found to contain 2.3g in every 100g.
Katharine Jenner, Campaign Director and Nutritionist at Cash, said, "We found enormous differences in salt content of sausages, regardless of the flavor, cost or meat content, showing that the hidden salt is completely unnecessary”.
Health experts have advised that reducing the salt content in food products like sausage do not affect food quality but will surely improve the quality of health.
