Roxon Accused of Accepting Political Donation from Big Tobacco

It has become really important for Health Minister Nicola Roxon to make herself prove clean on tobacco donations as the Federal opposition has accused Ms. Roxon of accepting political donations from big tobacco.

Tuesday night has really shaken Ms. Roxon as the same night it had been revealed that in 2005, Ms. Roxon asked three executives at Philip Morris for their support in her re-election by attending a $1500 a table fundraiser but Ms. Roxon denies the charges.

The accusations were marked by the Opposition health spokesman Peter Dutton, who interrupted the ongoing parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday by saying that Ms. Roxon’s requests for funding were just a far cry from the minister's public condemnation of political donations from big tobacco.

“This is a government that is all at sea, not just on this issue but on every issue they take”, he told parliament, demanding Ms. Roxon to provide an explanation to prove herself innocent. Upon which, the labor tried to gag Mr. Dutton but failed in their attempts, post which Speaker Harry Jenkins sided with the government to defeat an opposition motion thereby allowing the Liberal frontbencher with some more time to speak to his motion.

Since past few weeks, Ms. Roxon has been attacking a coalition for continuing to accept political donations from big tobacco, for which she had been repeatedly calling Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to kick the habit.
