Aiming to create awareness among women regarding the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, very soon a program will be bankrolled by the world’s biggest spirits company.
Diageo, the back behind drinks including Guinness, Baileys and Smirnoff Ice has decided to offer midwives and gynecologist with £4million so that they could tell expectant mothers the dangers of alcohol and ways to avoid it.
In this regard, yesterday several concerns have been raised by the British Medical Association (BMA), because there might arise conflict of interest in some cases about the drinks industry funding health campaigns.
According to a spokesman, ‘If the drinks industry does fund a health campaign, it is essential that independent clinical advice is sought’.
As a part of Government’s ‘responsibility deal’, Diageo’s pledge in regard of funding advice for pregnant women also aims in encouraging various other big business, charities and retailers, so that they could change their behavior and back policies.
The funds that will be collected by this initiative of Diageo will be directly donated to trained midwives. Besides, for a new online course, surveys and a distance-learning package also, this money will be used.
