Hospital Wait Time Keeps Getting Longer

Hospital Wait Time Keeps Getting LongerWait times at hospitals are getting increasingly worse. The NSW Bureau of Health Information stated that NSW residents are waiting 10 weeks longer for elective surgery than two years ago.

Nearly 30% of people arriving at the emergency department with severe conditions were not seen immediately.

The median waiting time has increased by 10 days from a year ago, making patients now waiting for 217 days.

There is a major focus on facilities that have a shortage of beds.

President of AMA’s NSW wing, Michael Steiner describes the results as “disappointing” and reinforces the fact that there is a major lack of beds. People who need to be admitted to the hospital will have to wait because of the shortage of beds.

Other hospitals such as Hunter New England are failing to meet other goals as well. The facility failed to meet its goal of 90% of patients arriving to the hospital to be transferred from stretcher to emergency department. They only achieved 71% of that goal.

NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, announced audits of bed numbers, waiting list figures and hospital infrastructure will be investigated. Once the investigation is thoroughly complete plans for improvement will follow.
