Scientists have found a drug – lorcaserin – which can reduce weight by 40% as compared to other weight lose drugs available in the market. The drug is said to be significant as it has potential to reduce cholesterol, blood pressure and waist size.
The manufacturer of drug is planning to submit it for regulatory approval of lorcaserin in Europe next year and it could be available for sale by 2013.
The findings of the scientists were presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Istanbul. For the study, the scientists analyzed trials on more than 7,500 people. They found that nine out of 10 people who took the drug witnessed some weight loss over a year. While some had no effect, others saw dramatic weight loss.
If the pill is approved, it will be only the second drug available to tackle obesity on the market as a number of drugs have been forced to withdraw as they caused some serious side-effects.
However, the manufacturers of drug has revealed that the use of drugs could causes headaches, nausea and dizziness moreover, Federal Drug Administration (FDA) last year rejected a license over fears it could promote tumors. The company has been asked by FDA to carry out more studies.
