Ignorance seems to prevail in hospitals all around China on the issue of HIV/AIDS. Patients with HIV/AIDS were considered discriminated by Chinese healthcare workers due to their infectious disease.
There seems to be a lack of understanding on the issues of HIV and AIDS. Some patients have been refused care as soon as hospitals found out about their disease. A man was forced to quit his job once his boss found out about his circumstances.
Hospitals seem to have a fear of cross-infection, while other hospitals fear other patients will stop coming to their facilities if they find out there are people infected with HIV and AIDS being treated. This could lead to a negative impact on their economic gains.
The UN estimates that 740,000 people were living with AIDS in 2009. Other health officials argue to believe the number is higher.
Those who suffer from HIV and AIDS are expected to be treated in designated hospitals to avoid the problems hospitals in China are having. “We should eliminate these designated hospitals,” Zhang Ke, Director of the infectious disease department at You An Hospital in Beijing states. It only promotes discrimination.
