Final Announcement on Radiotherapy Centre to be Made on MondayFinal announcement regarding radiotherapy centre at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry will be made on Monday by Health Minister, Edwin Poots.

Before making the final announcement, Mr. Poots has held various meetings regarding the re-opening of the radioactive centre with patients and cancer specialists. The radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin Hospital was put on hold by the previous Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey who said that he did not have funds to build the centre and run it.

Cancer patients are celebrating a double victory with new rules to stop the cancer patients from spending hours in A&E and the expected announcement that the new Altnagelvin treatment centre will go ahead.

Re-opening of the radioactive centre is expected to end huge public protests and rallies held by the cancer support groups to sustain the centre. Supporters of the centre also gave a petition with 15,000 signatures calling for the radiotherapy centre to go ahead in 2015 to the health minister.

In response to the petition, Mr. Poots said that his decision will be in favor of the sufferers. The announcement will be based on is non-partisan and non-political decision.
