Obesity Genes Identified

Obesity Genes IdentifiedThe scientists have discovered the gene, which is responsible for the obesity in a human body. They have named this gene as ‘KLF14’. This gene is being linked to the cholesterol level and type-2 diabetes. Now the doctors can step ahead in examining weigh-related diseases like heart disease and diabetes.

Oxford University’s Professor Mark McCarthy, who co-led the study, said: “We are working hard right now to understand how we can use this information to improve treatment of these conditions.”

This gene is mainly inherited from mum and only this gene decides whether the kid will be obese or not. It also helps in managing the weight in the body and behavior of the other genes present in the fat of the body. The other vital role of this gene is controlling body-mass index, cholesterol, insulin and glucose levels. This gene acts as a ‘master gene’ as it is controlling many vital functions in the human body.

In this study, more than 20,000 genes fat samples were collected and examined in biopsies from 800 British female patients and it was found out that ‘KLF14’ acts as a controller gene that helps to control obesity in the body.

The above study was performed by the researchers from King’s College London and the University of Oxford.
