In Liverpool pregnant women wanted for obesity trial

pregnant womenDue to more babies being born obese, pregnant women are being recruited by a hospital in Liverpool to test a drug that can help in keeping obesity away among newborns.

The trial will be led by the University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian and there hospitals are taking part in this. Liverpool Women's Hospital is one of three hospitals.

An obese woman's unborn baby's weight can be controlled by Metformin, according to various doctors as there are more chances of obese women giving birth to obese babies.

It was seen that in 2010, about 150 babies born at the hospital weighed more than 10lb.

The study is being led by Dr Andrew Weeks and he stated that mother's blood sugar is reduced by drugs that are often used by diabetics.

He added, "What happens then is that the blood sugar going through to the baby is also reduced a little bit so the baby doesn't have to cope with high levels of sugar and that has this weight reduction effect on the baby in utero."

The drug according to him was safe to be used during pregnancy.
