For crash care hospital to charge insurance companies

insuranceFor people who have been in a car crash, some of the treatment costs will be covered by motor insurance companies in Jersey.

Every year more than £200,000 will be saved with this step, the health department has said.

For every person that is treated by the health service after getting injured on the road, can get the health service a claim up to £2,000 from insurance companies under the Jersey law.

This will begin from May, according to the General Hospital managing director, Andrew McLaughlin.

Cost recovery was included according to the calculations made by the car insurance premiums, McLaughlin said.

Following a car crash, Jersey General Hospital was visited by more than 400 people last year.

In a review of cost recovery, insurers could take part. And it could be seen that whether there will be an increase in the amount claimed by the hospital in case a patient needs off-island treatment after a serious crash.

“Introducing Hospital charges will come as no surprise to motor insurers. Discussions have already taken place with industry representatives and the introduction of a cost recovery scheme in Jersey had been anticipated,” he said.
