Kidney cancer drug cannot justify benefit due to high cost

KidneyThere have been affirmations about an increase in the overall survival gain of about three months if people who suffer from advanced kidney cancer take everolimus.

There will also be a discount offered by the manufacturer Novartis for the pack that was supposed to be £2,822 a pack and every year it came to £34,235.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, Nice, stated that despite the discount offered by Novartis, the price cannot justify the amount of benefit being provided by everolimus as still the cost is high.

Mike Hobday, Head of Policy at Macmillan Cancer Support, said, “This is very disappointing news for cancer patients with advanced kidney cancer, who have repeatedly lost out on getting drugs on the NHS. Drugs for rarer cancers are often more expensive as they can be harder to develop and are intended for smaller populations.”

In Britain about 4,000 people are diagnosed with this cancer every year and Nice’s decision is suppose to affect them all. Especially people who are not responding to drug treatments given initially will get affected the most.
