A recent research carried out by the Welsh scientists has unveiled that honey could help in fighting against the antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Medicinal properties of honey are known to us for a long time, but the recent study is expected to add to the medicinal value of honey. The study also claims that honey can also be used to clear wounds which are chronically infected with bacteria.
Professor, Rose Cooper from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, said that the study has found that honey can interfere with the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in a variety of ways. The researchers are now trying to find how honey interacts with three types of bacteria that commonly fill wounds, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Group A Streptococci and Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Laboratory tests revealed that manuka honey which is derived from nectar collected by honeybees foraging on the manuka tree in New Zealand can make these bacteria sensitive to the antibiotic methicillin.
The researchers are also working on the combinations of manuka honey and antibiotics for developing a treatment to fight antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
