Last week Goa education minister Atanasio Monserrate was detained at the Mumbai airport for carrying unaccounted cash. On Friday he was called by Customs officials for inquiring.
On 2nd of April Monserrate was going to Dubai but at the airport only he was detained. He was having with him a huge amount of foreign currency. He had a total Rs 24 lakh as per Indian money with him which was beyond the amount permitted by the authorities. He has been enquired for about 12 hours about this matter.
The minister had USD 2, 5000 traveller's cheque, over 70,000 dirhams and Rs 1.25 lakh in currency.
This was his second investigation done by Customs officials and was asked to give the proof regarding the money he had. Earlier, the authorities had courted controversy when they discharged the minister instead of arresting him.
A senior Customs official has stated that they had called the minister again to recheck the documents and have a fresh enquiry. With the minister, his personal assistant was also presented during the enquiry session.
Earlier Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was detained at the Delhi airport for carrying Rs 60 lakh of secret foreign currency.
