Estrogen Therapy Could Reduce the Risk of Breast Cancer and Heart Attack

breast-cancer-heart-attackA recent research conducted as a part of landmark Women’s Health Initiative study has revealed surprising results. The research has unveiled that estrogen-only therapy can reduce the risk of breast cancer and heart attack among women.

The study evaluated 7,645 women for 10 years, six years during hormone treatment and four years after ending the treatment. Women were randomly assigned to take hormone therapy.

During the treatment, women who took the therapy were 36% more likely to have stroke and 47% were more likely to have blood clots as compared to those who did not took the therapy. After ten years there was no significant difference between the groups for these conditions.

For women in their 50s, the treatment started showing benefits over time. After a time period of more than 10 years, it was found that women who took hormone therapy were at a 46% reduced risk of heart attack and 27% reduced risk of breast cancer. The hormone therapy was not at all beneficial for women in their 70s. After taking the therapy their risk of developing some health complications was increased.
