Hepatitis C is a chronic viral disease that affects the liver. Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that about 3.2 million Americans suffer from hepatitis C. Nearly 12,000 people die from the liver disease and liver cancer linked with hepatitis C, every year.
Most of the people do not show symptoms of the disease for many years and after the diagnosis of the symptoms, it becomes difficult to treat the situation. The disease spreads through sharing needles for taking drugs. The virus can also spread by using non-sterile syringes for giving vaccination.
The researchers at Henry Ford Hospital have developed a new three-drug cocktail for the patients of hepatitis C, which can be a new hope for the patients. The cocktail is more effective than the two-drug treatment. The new drug includes boceprevir in addition to peginterferon-ribavirin, which are used in the two-drug treatment. The addition of new drug, boceprevir reduced the virus to a large extent.
The clinical trials of the drug have also found that it reduces the duration of therapy, from 48 weeks to 28 weeks. The drug is expected to bring a significant improvement in the current therapy for hepatitis C.
