Less awareness leads to women worrying about cancer recurrence

Less awareness leads to women worrying about cancer recurrenceAccording to a new study, worrying about the cancer returning is more among women who have taken treatment for early-stage breast cancer as compared to women who have not.

Researchers said that a woman’s quality of life and medical care are likely to get affected a lot by such anxiety.

Study author Nancy Janz, of the University of Michigan School of Public Health, said, “How much women worry about recurrence is often not aligned with their actual risk for cancer recurrence.”

There is not much of a risk of the cancer coming back among women who have taken treatment for early-stage breast cancer but still women worry a lot. This calls for steps to be taken to bring down this fear among women by making them understand the strategies and the possibility of the cancer coming back.

Between 2005 and February 2007, about 2290 women were included in the study who were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Women who were better aware about the clinical information they were given and symptoms were not many and care quality was also better had the least chances of worrying about cancer recurrence as compared to women who were working, had more pain and were taking radiation treatment.
