According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics, it has been established that parents should ask their kids about the use of social media, and chatting over Internet, including Facebook. The research revealed that around 22% of the youth go online more than 10 times in a day.
According to the study, it has been revealed that teenagers and children use the Internet at very high rates.
"A large part of this generation's social and emotional development is occurring while on the Internet and on cell phones”, asserted Co-author of the AAP report, Gwenn O'Keeffe.
Doctors urged people to ask their kids about the use of Internet and online issues that they face such as cyber-bullying, sexting, depression and social anxiety, and difficulty in managing their time.
The AAP said that to get involved in kids, conversation and online participation of parents is very important. Parents should learn the use of Internet for better understanding with their adolescents.
However, AAP said that the use of social sites in not bad for kids, as it enhances the knowledge, communication skills and technical abilities.
Online media raises the risks when it comes to peer pressure, relationships, inappropriate content, online privacy etc.
