A leading charity stated that for signs of dementia, routine screening should be done of everyone who is over-75 by the NHS.
The Alzheimer's Society said, “The radical change was needed as fewer than half of the estimated 750,000 dementia sufferers receive a diagnosis.”
The society added that care, support and treatment are being missed out by hundreds of thousands and this also includes such medicines that can bring down the pace of the disease.
Anxiety is something that can be developed among people if NHS did routine screenings and NHS resources might have to face an additional burden and stated that a better way out was people who were being admitted to hospitals for various reasons were given targeted checks.
The Alzheimer's Society director of research Professor Clive Ballard said, “At the moment, there are 750,000 people with dementia in the UK and it will be more than a million by 2021, but less than half of those individuals actually receive a diagnosis of dementia.”
Trial involving a drug called Circadin on people who have dementia will be launched by researchers in Scotland.
It has been seen that sleep hormone melatonin is present in the drug that effectively helps making quality of life better for dementia patients.
