Smoking ban in Scotland hailed on fifth anniversary

Smoking-banAs the five-year anniversary approaches of Scotland’s ban on smoking at public places, the ban has been hailed by experts and has termed it a huge success in bringing positive results.

Since the ban that started in 2006, hospital admissions among kids who are asthmatic, a 15 per cent drop has been noticed and bar workers too are experiencing 17 per cent less heart attacks but reports state that 25 per cent people in Scotland still smoke.

Many pubs faced close downs and many lost their jobs due to the change in the law, according to the Scottish Licensed Trade Association.

Its chief executive, Paul Waterson, said, “The predicted upturn in new customers attracted by smoke-free pubs had simply not materialized.”

The 800 pub closures could have been due to low prices of alcohol in supermarkets and the economic downturn. He further added that smoking ban lead to the starting point for all of this.

He also added that for making customers come back, authorities should make certain changes in the law and make smoking rooms in certain pubs on the fifth anniversary.
