Nuneaton firm prosecuted following teenager’s accident

Health and Safety ExecutiveA teenager was pinned to the ground by a forklift truck and following this, the Health and Safety Executive, HSE, has prosecuted a Nuneaton recycling company.

At the time when the vehicle overturned and landed on top of the 18 year old, on St George's Way, the forklift was being used to unload a vehicle for Intelligent Recycling Ltd by the teenager whose identity has been sealed.

Last year on March 1, the incident injured the teenager following, which he broke his left lower leg, dislocated his left ankle and his left elbow was broken, crushed and dislocated. He had to hospitalized for one whole month and he is still unable to put his arm straight despite undergoing five operations.

No induction training and a formal training was given to the employee for handling a forklift truck, Nuneaton Magistrates' Court heard despite the teenager being in his first proper job.

It was also known following an investigation that there was no supervision in the yard area and forklift trucks were being operated by other employees also who were completely untrained.

After the hearing HSE inspector Michelle Morrison commented, "This was an entirely preventable incident which caused serious injuries to an employee in his first job."
