Stem cell therapy gets vision back for US medico

Stem-cell-therapyShailesh is a medical student in the US and is 22 years old and he lost his eyesight after he swallowed a toxic alcohol called methanol. His blindness was irreversible, this is what doctors in the US told him. He came to India for a stem cell therapy and will get back to the US soon to see his doctors.

Due to the therapy, he can easily make out colors and can read now. His progress will be monitored by doctors in the US after he gets back there.

He said, “I am sure they are going to be surprised.”

Doctors had told him that his vision can never come back and this was due to severe damage done to his optic nerve and this was not possible with treatment also.

In the US stem cell therapy is not recommended as it still is a part of clinical trials for ocular diseases but restrictions in India are less.

Shailesh had for treatment come to Chennai where he had met Dr Himanshu Basnal of the Institute of Spinal Injury and Stem Cell Research, Rudrapur and Laksha Hospital in Chennai, who is a stem cell therapist and made him regain his vision.
