The government’s decision to suspend the subsidy of seven medicines included Botox and oxycodone has been defended by the Federal Health Minister.
The government has added seven new medicines and vaccines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) from April 1. The other medicines which were used for the treatment of conditions including schizophrenia, pain, lung disease and blood clots were suspended by the government for indefinite time. The medicines are still recommended for listing on the medical subsidy scheme.
Chief Executive of Medicines Australia Dr. Brendan Shaw said that the patients would be required to pay $100 per month for the PSB medicines instead of the PBS co-payment of $34.20. He added that the decision of suspending the medicines would leads to uncertainty among patients.
The doctors believe that the suspension of these medicines will create a difficult situation for the patients who need them. The patients would have to pay more for these medicines. Ms Roxon said that in all cases there are alternative treatments available that are listed on the PBS.
