US Charity Offers Cash to 26 Female Drug Addicts for Contraceptives

AddictsProject Prevention, a US charity has offered an annual payment of £200 to 26 female drug addicts in Britain to use contraceptives. The money would be paid by cheque in three installments.

The charity says that the payments have been made so that the drug addicts use birth controls. The charity has expressed its concern over sexually-transmitted diseases and pregnancy. The money is offered to them so that they opt for contraceptive implants or get the coils fitted.

A recent report by Bernadette Hard, a GP specializing in substance misuse has shown that 250,000 children in the UK face a parental drug abuse.

The plans of handing over cash to drug addicts have received criticism. The drug users are going to spend the money on drugs and drink instead of the contraceptives. DrugScope, a British drug charity said that the idea of paying money to the drug addicts was unfair and questionable.

Welsh drugs charity Kaleidoscope has also shown interest in launching a same program. The Chief Executive of Kaleidoscope, Martin Blakebrough says that instead of paying cash they would prefer to give £50 supermarket vouchers to attend a family clinic, to the drug addicts.
