New Policy for Pharmacists in Saskatchewan

Don-McMorrisThe Health Minister Don McMorris announced that the pharmacists across Saskatchewan will have expanded authority to prescribe the patients. The amendments in the law provide the pharmacists with the right to give emergency supplies of prescribed medications to the patients and they can also offer existing prescriptions for a maximum of 100 days.

The Health Minister says that the new policy will provide the residents with an easy and competent access to the health-care services. This will also mitigate the patients’ problems which the y faces after running short of prescription drugs and medications.

Ray Joubert, the Registrar of the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacists says that "Our bylaws require pharmacists to consult that Pharmaceutical Information Program -the patient's profile on that system -before they make these decisions."

He added that before initiating such a program the pharmacists will be trained following a series of guidelines to guarantee the safety of patients.

The prescription which pharmacists can provide has a limit. They cannot provide controlled substances, such as narcotics.

President of the Saskatchewan Medical Association, Dr. Guruswamy Sridhar said that the amendments in the pharmacy bylaws will be beneficial for the patients and will also relieve the pressure on over-worked doctors.
